1. Must have a cutter option

2. Must have the ZEBRA printer emulation option (This is standard on all Citizen printers as of December 2011)

3. CAN have the ethernet connection option as well if you wish. This is usually better as it does not require that a computer be on and logged in to use the printer.

Discussion of the types of printers:

BOTH types will print bar codes that are readable reliably.

Thermal vs. thermal transfer option - the thermal printer will burn the paper, the thermal transfer actually transfers carbon to the label just like a laser printer would.

Pros for thermal - it is more cost effective - you only have to purchase the labels, and easier to load since there is no ribbon. No ribbon to shred for HIPA issues.

Cons for thermal - they are heat sensitive and if you are going to have them around for a long period of time they may turn grey.

Pros for thermal transfer - it is longer lasting and does not turn darker in color with time and heat.

Cons for thermal transfer - you have to purchase ribbons as well as the paper. This increases the overall cost of running the printer. The thermal transfer printer will do BOTH - thermal and thermal transfer so it offers the most options to the end user. You will need to shred your transfer ribbon as it contains patient information in a readable format and has HIPA issues.

Remember - if you order a 621 it will come pre-configured as a thermal TRANSFER mode device. (This means that it will be expecting a ribbon.) If you are going to use DIRECT thermal then be aware that you will have to change the default configuration (software driver) or you will get a label printed, cut and then it will beep.

Remember that Thermal TRANSFER labels mean that you are using the black ribbon in your printer as well as the roll of labels and the TRANSFER of the black carbon ribbon takes place to print your label. If you have a 521 printer then you can ONLY use the Direct Thermal labels. If you have the 621 printer then you COULD use either label you wish.

If you have a 621 printer and want to use the THERMAL TRANSFER CCSI will stock the transfer ribbons but you will need to let them know that you intend to purchase those from CCSI.

Note: These labels use a special adhesive that is supposed to REDUCE the gumming of the cutter.

If you have a ZEBRA Printer and need labels this company can also supply you excellent special adhesive labels for $104.00 for a case of four rolls of labels.

If you need OPUS labels there are two options available - these are different label styles -

OPUS-2x2 labels - Onnen Company PSOXDT OPus-style XL Thermal Label - 2 1/4 inch by 1 7/8 inch (1000 per roll) These labels consist of one label each that have a "perf" at the bottom of the label. This gives the "appearance of having "two" labels per each label printed and allows easy bending of the label over an OPUS cassette.

Second option for OPUS labels:

These are what we call the OPUS 3x2 labels. They are larger than the OPUS 2x2 labels and consist of One large label with a perf and then another label for each label printed - this ends up with three different sections for each label (one large label divided into two sections - like the OPUS 2x23 label and an additional label for each printed label).
